The White Tower – Undoubtedly the most iconic monument of the city, the White Tower should be on your list when you're visiting Thessaloniki. The White Tower was used as a prison during the Ottoman occupation of Greece in 1535. The tower was named “The Tower of Blood”, or “The Red Tower”, because of the many prisoners who were executed and tortured. However, in 1890, it was named “the White Tower” after a prisoner repainted it in white in exchange for his liberty. You can go to the top of the tower to experience the 360° view of the city, the sea and even Mount Olympus.
Thessaloniki Waterfront - One of the best things to do in Thessaloniki is to take a stroll along the Thessaloniki waterfront. You can take a walk on a 5-km long promenade on the seaside. This promenade was completely renovated a few years ago and now connected with the Photography Museum, the White Tower and Thessaloniki Concert Hall. Here, you can find a lot of bars and restaurants. There is also a sculpture “The Umbrellas”, a modern sculpture located in the park, about 500m away from the White Tower.
Hagios Demetrios – This church was built after Thessaloniki's Patron Saint Demetrius being martyred in the 4th century. The original building was destroyed by fire, but it was restored in the early 630s. The iconic church feature is the mosaic panels dating to sometime between the 630s to the 730s. These panels showcase Demetrius with children and with the church founders. If you love history, you will surely be amazed by the history that this church holds.
