Emerald is a town that is located in the district of Queensland, Australia. The town is considered to be the business center for the Central Highlands Regional Council. The city is located on the Nogoa River which is a branch of the flowing Fitzroy River. Formerly the city was occupied by the Gayiri Aboriginal group. Then in the year 1843 to 1845, the city was discovered by Ludwig Leichhardt. The city was then established as a city in 1879. The city sources their economy from a large coal mining industry. The city also grows cotton, grapes and grain. The cotton also was processed at a local factory, Yamala Cotton Gin. Towards the south of the city, there are other towns called sapphire and Rubyvale to indicate the gems that can be found there. The whole area then named The Gemfields. Emerald also has one of the largest artificial lakes in the whole of Australia. The lake is supplying the water to the cotton industry making sure it is growing properly for harvest.
