The airport was first built in 1958 and opened on 1 January 1960 but stopped operations in fall 1965. Construction started again in early September 2010 to expand and reopen the airport with an investment of 450 million yuan, and it was originally projected to open at the end of 2011. Linfen Airport opened to commercial traffic in late January 2016. The airport also provides land public transportation such as bus and taxi to passengers to go in and out from the airport.
