Terengganu started off as an independent sultanate in 1724 with the first Sultan being Tun Zainal Abidin. In the 19th century, Terengganu became a vassal state of Siam, and sent tribute every year to the King of Siam called bunga mas. Under Siamese rule, Terengganu prospered, and was largely left alone by the authorities in Bangkok. The terms of the Anglo-Siamese Treaty of 1909 saw power over Terengganu transferred from Siam to Great Britain.

The move was highly unpopular locally, and in 1928 the British used military force to suppress a popular uprising. During World War II, Japan occupied Terengganu and transferred sovereignty over the state back to Siam, along with Kelantan, Kedah, and Perlis. After the defeat of Japan, British control over these Malay states was reestablished. Terengganu became a member of the Federation of Malaya in 1948, and a state of independent Malaya in 1957.

How to Get There

By Flight

From Kuala Lumpur, there are daily flights operating from KLIA and KLIA2 to the Kuala Terengganu Airport. Journey by air takes approximately 45 minutes and is mainly operated by MAS and Air Asia. There are also direct flights to Redang Island from the Subang Airport in Kuala Lumpur.

By Bus

Express coaches depart daily from Kuala Lumpur and the journey takes approximately 6-7 hours depending on the traffic. If you are travelling from Penang, it would take 9 hours or so and from Johor, about 9 hours too. Buses from Kuala Lumpur departs from Terminal Bersepadu Selatan.

By Train

The KTMB train (Kereta Api Tanah Melayu) can be used for overnight journeys from Singapore to Tanah Merah, Wakaf Baru and Tumpat in Kelantan. From economy seats to comfortable sleeping beds, you can choose the service you would like.

Tourist Attractions

Kemasik

The beaches around the town of Kemasik offer visitors great tranquillity. The town actually runs along the sea-shore, enabling you to shop for souvenirs while relaxing on the beach. Coconut trees are found in abundance along the sand, and it would be an incomplete experience without taking a sip of coconut water sold by the many vendors that are found along the beach.

Pulau Kapas

Yet another excellent island, Pulau Kapas’ waters are home to a variety of hard and soft corals besides the marine life. This island is particularly known for squid fishing with only one resort available for accommodation.
