Ivalo is a small village in the town of Inari, Lapland, Finland, situated on the Ivalo River 21 kilometres (12 mi) south of Lake Inari. It has a population of 4,000 as of 2003 and a small airport. Thirty kilometres (19 mi) south of Ivalo is a very famous resort called Saariselkä. Many visitors visit this place every year for winter sports such as downhill and cross-country skiing, husky, snowboarding, and reindeer sledge riding and for summer activities such as trekking and hiking in the Saariselkä fjells, kayaking in Lapland's rivers, mountain biking, fishing, panning for gold, etc. Ivalo was cruelly damaged during the Lapland War (1944 until 1945) by retreating German army led by Generaloberst Lothar Rendulic. The village was later significantly rebuilt.
