Cagayan de Oro is located in Northern Mindanao. It is the capital of the Province of Misamis Oriental. Dubbed as the “City of Golden Friendship”, it is one of the safest and most progressive cities in this part of the Philippines. Cagayan de Oro, popularly called Cagayan or CDO, is home to more than half a million inhabitants. It is a place where adventure, nature and city living intersect in a vibrant blend of diverse culture and art. It is the white-water rafting capital of the country, and shopping, the educational and economic hub of the region. Apart from that, this city also serves as hub and gateway to Northern Mindanao, an area filled with natural wonders such as the vivid seascape of Camiguin to the highlands of Bukidnon or the majestic waterfalls of Agusan del Norte.


Best time to fly from Calbayog City to Cagayan de Oro

The best time to visit Cagayan de Oro is during the 4th week of August when colourful festivals and street parades are abundant. It is the time when Cagayan de Oro will celebrate the Kagay-an Festival, an annual fiesta of sorts where the locals will indulge in festivities, street dancing, trade fairs, and a beauty contest. It is the biggest event in the city. Prices for hotels and flights are more expensive during the festival month and accommodations will mostly be booked. Travellers are advised to book accommodations a couple of months in advance to secure accommodations during the festival.;


Main airports available in Calbayog City and Cagayan de Oro

Calbayog Airport – This airport serves the general area of Calbayog and is located in the province of Samar in the Philippines. Both Philippine Airlines (PAL) and Cebu Pacific Air (CEB) provides services to this airport with daily flights to and from Manila.


Laguindingan Airport – This airport is the main airport that serves the cities of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan, as well as the provinces of Misamis Oriental, Lanao del Norte and Bukidnon in Northern Mindanao, Philippines. The airport is Mindanao’s second-busiest airport after Francisco Bangoy International Airport in Davao City. You can get direct flights here from Cebu, Manila, Davao and Iloilo. There are several ways to get to the airport from Cagayan de Oro city centre. You can either take the bus, express van or a taxi with a travel time of approximately 30-45 minutes.


Climate pattern in Calbayog City and Cagayan de Oro

Despite being located in a typhoon-free area, Cagayan de Oro still experiences rain. The best time to go when the weather is a consideration would be from March to June as it is sunny during this time. The average temperature at this time is around 27 ˚C while the air is moderately humid. It is undoubtedly one of the best times to visit Cagayan de Oro and ultimately the peak season for tourists.


Highlights attractions in Cagayan de Oro

  • Mapawa Nature Park - One of the most beautiful and breathtaking tourist spots in Cagayan de Oro is the Mapawa Nature Park. This forest park is located at Barangay Cugman, and it offers a wide variety of activities such as climbing or swimming in the waterfalls, horseback riding, canyoneering and also cliff jumping. You would not only enjoy all the activities they offer, but you could also have fun with nature surrounding you. When you visit Mapawa Nature Park, you can relax, go on a hike, or maybe even set up a camp in the forest. Just be sure to clean up after yourself. All visitors will be required to pay a PHP 50 environmental fee while the various activities available at the park will also impose different fees depending on the event itself. The park is open daily from 7 am to 5 pm.
  • Divine Mercy Shrine – This shrine has become a fantastic tourist attraction and many devotees flock to Divine Mercy Shrine to attend mass or join the events during Holy Week, the Feast of Mercy and the Celebration of the Immaculate Concepcion. Apart from attending the ceremony, you can also climb to the heart of Jesus guided by the people working there, and you can silently pray inside the heart. There are also a lot of souvenir shops and food booths available if you’re feeling hungry. Visitors to the shrine are advised to avoid being too loud or distracting devotees from praying and reflecting quietly. Visitors who camp over during the feast are also advised to clean up after themselves.
  • High Ridge – If you are interested in getting a picturesque view of the city while dining at a restaurant, then High Ridge is the place to go. You can enjoy a pleasant view of the sunset while enjoying your meal with your fellow travelers or loved one. The night view here is considered the best in the city and visitors are invited to come and admire the view of downtown Cagayan de Oro. Visitors can visit High Ridge by taking a free shuttle from Barangay Macasandig Covered Court. The shuttle operates from 11.30 am – 1.30 pm, 5 pm – 5 30 pm, 7 pm – 7 30 pm while dropping off to Macasandig Covered Court is only during 9 – 9.30pm only. There will be a PHP100 entrance fee imposed on all adults while children below 12 years old can enter for free.
