Amami is a subtropical island in the Amami Islands, part of the Ryukyu Islands, Japan. The island is the largest island in the Amami Islands. Amami is located approximately 300 km North of Okinawa Island and 380 km South of Kyushu. In 1624, the Satsuma Province’s daimyo annexed this island from the hands of the Ryukyu Kingdom. After World War II, the island had been under US control for almost 7 years. Amami is the habitat of several rare or threatened animals, including Amami rabbits and Garrulus lidthi birds. Both are endemic to Amami and Tokunoshima. Amami rabbits include living fossils because they represent ancient rabbits of Asian descent that have become extinct elsewhere. Amami is the second largest island in the Ryukyu Islands after Okinawa Island or the seventh biggest island in Japan.
