This is a lovely place to stay in the town of Kuala Kangsar. Perfect for cycle tourists like us. Not too far to walk to restaurants. The gardens and the pond are lovely and very relaxing to sit in. We had a standard container room which had lots of space and seats outside. The best part was meeting the very kind and welcoming host, he really made our day.

More about hotels in Perak

Guide to Hotels and Accommodation in Perak

Perak stretches from the mountainous interior of the Titiwangsa Range to the Straits of Malacca on the west coast, offering a diverse landscape that includes dramatic limestone karst formations, royal towns, tropical islands, and one of the world's oldest rainforests. The state capital, Ipoh, has transformed from a sleepy former tin-mining city into a thriving foodie and heritage destination that regularly features on international travel lists. Beyond Ipoh, Perak offers island escapes on Pangkor Island, jungle adventures in Royal Belum, and colonial charm in the royal town of Kuala Kangsar. Traveloka provides the easiest way to browse, compare, and book Perak hotels across all these exciting destinations.

Best Areas to Stay in Perak

Perak's attractions are spread across the state, so your choice of accommodation base matters:

Ipoh Old Town is the most popular base for visitors. The colonial-era shophouses, cave temples, and legendary food scene are all within easy reach. Hotels range from converted heritage buildings to modern boutique properties, all bookable on Traveloka.

Ipoh New Town offers more contemporary hotels, shopping malls, and nightlife options. It is well-connected to Old Town and makes a comfortable base for longer stays.

Pangkor Island is Perak's premier beach destination, with resorts ranging from budget chalets to the ultra-luxury Pangkor Laut Resort. Ferries depart from Lumut, about 1.5 hours from Ipoh.

Kuala Kangsar is Perak's royal town, home to the stunning Ubudiah Mosque and Perak Royal Museum. It offers a quieter, more cultural experience with limited but charming accommodation options.

Gerik is the gateway to the Royal Belum State Park. Explore accommodation near Gerik if you plan to venture into this ancient rainforest.

Perak Hotel Prices and Budget Guide

Perak is renowned for offering exceptional value, especially in Ipoh:

Budget Hotels and Hostels: RM 40 – RM 110 per night. Ipoh has a fantastic selection of clean, well-run budget hostels and guesthouses. Many are housed in beautifully restored shophouses.

Mid-Range Hotels: RM 110 – RM 280 per night. Comfortable hotels with swimming pools, complimentary breakfast, and good locations. This bracket offers the best value in Perak, with properties often exceeding expectations.

Premium Hotels and Resorts: RM 280 – RM 900 per night. Top-tier properties in Ipoh, luxury beach resorts on Pangkor Island, and exclusive jungle lodges near Royal Belum. These deliver world-class experiences at prices lower than comparable properties in KL or Penang.

Ipoh is a popular weekend getaway for KL residents, so hotel prices can be 20% to 40% higher on Friday and Saturday nights. Weekday stays on Traveloka offer considerably better value.

Top Attractions and Things to Do in Perak

Ipoh Old Town Heritage Walk takes you through streets lined with colonial shophouses, vibrant street art murals (similar to Penang's famous art trail), and traditional kopitiams. The Concubine Lane area is a bustling hub of cafés, shops, and snack stalls.

Kek Lok Tong and Sam Poh Tong Cave Temples are spectacular Buddhist temples built into and around Ipoh's dramatic limestone caves. Kek Lok Tong features a serene garden at the back of the cave with mountain views. Both are free to enter.

Pangkor Island offers beautiful beaches like Coral Beach and Nipah Bay, snorkelling, island-hopping boat trips, and the chance to see hornbills up close. The island has a relaxed, uncommercialised vibe.

Royal Belum State Park is home to a 130-million-year-old rainforest (even older than Taman Negara) and is one of the last refuges of the Malayan tiger. Multi-day jungle expeditions can be arranged from Gerik.

Kellie's Castle is a hauntingly beautiful unfinished mansion built by Scottish planter William Kellie Smith in the early 1900s. Located near Batu Gajah, it is a fascinating historical curiosity (entry RM 5).

Lost World of Tambun is a natural hot springs and water theme park near Ipoh, popular with families. Day passes cost approximately RM 60 to RM 90.

Best Time to Visit Perak

Perak enjoys a tropical climate with temperatures between 24°C and 33°C year-round:

January to April is generally the driest period and the best time for outdoor activities, beach trips to Pangkor, and jungle excursions to Royal Belum.

May to September brings intermittent afternoon showers but remains perfectly pleasant for travel. Hotel rates are often more attractive during this period on Traveloka.

October to December is the wetter monsoon season. Ipoh's indoor attractions, cave temples, and food scene remain fully enjoyable. Pangkor Island may experience rougher seas but generally stays open year-round unlike east coast islands.

Getting to and Around Perak

By Car: Ipoh is about 2 to 2.5 hours from Kuala Lumpur via the PLUS highway. This is the most popular way to reach Perak, and the well-maintained highway makes for a comfortable drive.

By Train: The KTM ETS high-speed train connects KL Sentral to Ipoh in just 2.5 hours, with frequent daily services. Fares start from around RM 25 to RM 40. This is one of the best train journeys in Malaysia.

By Bus: Express buses from KL's TBS terminal to Ipoh take about 3 hours and cost RM 20 to RM 30. Buses also connect Ipoh to Penang, Cameron Highlands, and other cities.

By Air: Sultan Azlan Shah Airport in Ipoh has limited domestic flights, mainly from Singapore.

Local Transport: Grab is widely available in Ipoh. For Pangkor Island, ferries depart from Lumut jetty (about 1.5 hours from Ipoh). Car rental is recommended for exploring attractions spread across the state, including the route to Alor Setar further north.

Perak Local Food and Dining

Ipoh is widely regarded as one of Malaysia's top food cities. The local cuisine is a major draw for domestic and international visitors:

Ipoh White Coffee — Ipoh is the birthplace of white coffee, roasted with margarine for a smooth, aromatic flavour. Old Town White Coffee and Nam Heong are legendary establishments (RM 3-5 per cup).

Ipoh Hor Fun (Kuey Teow) — silky smooth flat rice noodles in a flavourful chicken and prawn broth, or served dry with shredded chicken and bean sprouts. A plate costs RM 5 to RM 8.

Bean Sprout Chicken (Nga Choy Kai) — blanched chicken paired with crunchy Ipoh bean sprouts (famous for their extra crunch due to the local water) and rice. This is Ipoh's signature dish, available from RM 8.

Ipoh Taugeh (Bean Sprouts) — so renowned that they deserve their own mention. Ipoh's limestone-filtered water produces uniquely plump and crunchy bean sprouts that are prized across Malaysia.

Salt-Baked Chicken — whole chicken baked in a crust of coarse salt until perfectly tender and flavourful, a specialty found in several Ipoh restaurants (RM 25-35 whole chicken).

Pomelo — Perak is famous for its Tambun pomelos, sweet and juicy citrus fruits that make perfect souvenirs. Available at roadside stalls for RM 8 to RM 15 each.

Tips for Booking Perak Hotels on Traveloka

Book Weekday Stays in Ipoh: Ipoh is a hugely popular weekend destination for KL residents. Hotels can be 20% to 40% cheaper from Monday to Thursday. Use Traveloka to compare weekday versus weekend rates.

Combine Ipoh with Pangkor: Many travellers spend 2 nights in Ipoh for food and heritage, then head to Pangkor Island for a beach break. Traveloka makes it easy to book both segments in one go.

Try Heritage Boutique Hotels: Ipoh's Old Town has several beautifully restored shophouse hotels that offer unique character. Look for these on Traveloka for a more memorable stay.

Check Traveloka Promotions: Perak hotels frequently feature in Traveloka flash sales and seasonal promotions. Enabling price alerts can help you snag the best deals.

Plan for Royal Belum: If visiting Royal Belum State Park from Gerik, note that accommodation within the park is limited and must often be arranged through tour operators. Book your Gerik hotel on Traveloka and arrange park tours separately.
