Hakodate features four distinct seasons. During winter, the city sees a substantial amount of snowfall around the year. Spring typically starts with some snowfall but gradually warms up as the season progresses. Summers are generally warm but not hot, with average high temperatures in the warmest month, August, hovers over 26 degrees Celcius. Fall is initially warm but will become colder as the season progresses. Overall, tourists are advised to bring warmer clothes due to its rather low temperature.   • Mount Hakodate – Simply the main attraction in Hakodate, Mount Hakodate offers a magnificent view of the whole Hakodate, especially at night. The summit of the mountain is located around 334 meters. To get on top of the mountain, tourists may opt for the ropeway or even hike your way up to the top if you are feeling energetic. At night, you’ll be able to witness the beautiful town twinkling beneath you, surrounded by the inky waters around the harbor.
  • Fort Goryokaku – Built-in 1864, this fort rose to fame after being the first fort of its kind to be constructed in Japan influenced by the western style. It was constructed in the shape of a star, hence, when you climb to the top and look back over, you will be able to see the unique design. Unfortunately, not the entire fort still stands as much as it was knocked down in the days of old but tourists can also go for a walk here and witness the pretty cherry trees that line the pathways. These are particularly breath-taking in the springtime when the cherry blossom season is in full swing.
  • Motomachi – If you are interested in history, Motomachi will catch your attention as it is known for being the historical heart of Hakodate. It features a range of beautiful architecture and consulate buildings such as the Roman Catholic Church, the Episcopal Church, the Russian Orthodox Church, and the former British Consulate building. What’s even more interesting is the fact that all these structures are built in the former European style.
