Poso is the capital of Poso Regency. Poso is located in the centre of Sulawesi Island, on the coast of Tomini Bay. It is also a major port and stops city on the Southcentral shore of Tomini Bay. Poso City is crossed by the Poso River which flows from Lake Poso in Pamona Puselemba sub-district. This city is an agglomeration of three districts, namely Poso Kota, Poso Kota Utara and Poso Kota Selatan. In 2017, Poso residents from three sub-districts estimated to be 51,909 people. The city began to develop as a small port city at the mouth of the Poso River in the late 19th century and making it one of the oldest cities in Central Sulawesi. It was one of the important cities for the Dutch to control the southern region of Tomini Bay at the beginning of their arrival. Poso was the seat of government of the Poso Landschap, Poso Onderafdeling and Poso Afdeling in colonial times. In the middle of World War II, Japan made Poso a part of their military service. Poso had become the capital of Central Sulawesi in 1948, before being moved to Palu.

It resumed its operations on July 13, 2005, after ten years of closing. The reason for operating again is the increasing movement of people from other regions in Sulawesi to Poso.
