Butuan or officially, the City of Butuan is a first-class highly urbanized city and regional center of the Caraga Region. Up to the year 2015, the city had an estimated population of 337, 063 people. From the year 1001 to 1756, Butuan was the capital of the Rajahnate of Butuan. Butuan was known for its gold and boat manufacturing and was said to have traded as far as Champa, Ming, Srivajata, Majapahit and the Bengali coasts.

Main airports available in Legazpi and Butuan

Legazpi Airport (LGP) - The Legazpi Airport, located 15km from town is the main airport in the Bicol region. The airport serves the surrounding areas of Legazpi, the capital city of Albay. To get to Legazpi city from the airport, you may head out of the airport gate and get a tricycle from there. Tricycle usually cost around P50 one way. One trip will take approximately 15 minutes, depending on traffic. If you walk to the road outside, you may take jeepneys to the Albay district or Daraga city. Even though Legazpi airport is a rather small airport which consists of a single-story building, it is equipped with a waiting area and a tour desk.

Bancasi Airport (BXU) - The Bancasi Airport serves the general area of the city of Butuan which is located in the province of Agusan del Norte. The airport is the largest airport in Caraga and the only airport in the region. To get from the airport to town, you can take a jeepney which is cheaper than taking a tricycle. The airport is a rather small airport but well equipped with shops, restaurants and souvenir stalls.

Climate pattern in Legazpi and Butuan

Both Legazpi experiences a tropical climate while Butuan experiences a tropical rainforest climate. The average temperature between the two cities also differs quite a lot with Legazpi having an average temperature of only 27.1 degrees Celsius but Butuan with an average temperature of 32.2 degrees Celsius. Even though both cities experience rainfall throughout the year, Legazpi has a much higher annual average of 3104 mm while Butuan only experiences 2057 mm of rainfall annually.

  • Balangay Shrine Museum - Just 5 kilometers out of the city, is the graveyard of the Balangay 1 which dates back to 320 AD. The boats build with wooden planks and edge-pegged, measure an average of 15 meters long and 3 meters wide. Nine Balangays have been found at the Ambangan Libertad sites where three have been excavated.
  • Mount Mayapay -Located southwest of the Agusan Valley is the majestic mountain plateau of Mount Mayapay. The mountain rises to 2,214 feet. The name Mayapay was from the ancient Majapahit Empire. Mount Mayapay can be seen once you land at the Bancasi airport. Visiting Mount Mayapay may however require a bit of effort as you will need the permission from the military commander from the city before climbing up the mountain. If you do plan to go, make sure you are fit and get enough training before you attempt the hike.
  • Butuan Diocesan Liturgical Museum - The Butuan Diocesan Liturgical Museum is a museum that houses various collections of the Roman Catholic church in Mindanao. The museum is located at St. Joseph Cathedral. If you are keen on visiting the museum, it is advised to make prior arrangements as the museum is not always open.
