It’s the kind of place where spontaneity thrives—where a quick stroll can lead you to unexpected finds and friendly conversations. So, if you’re keen to discover more and make your time here memorable without emptying your wallet, keep reading this article—there’s so much more waiting to be uncovered.

The best attractions to visit in Johor Bahru

  • Sultan Abu Bakar State Mosque – Sitting proudly on a hill, this mosque offers stunning architecture and a gorgeous view of the Strait of Johor. Even if you're not into buildings, it's hard not to admire this beauty.
  • Johor Bahru Old Chinese Temple – Tucked right in the middle of the city’s buzz, this peaceful little spot is one of the oldest structures in town. It’s a lovely mix of culture and calm.
  • Legoland Malaysia – Whether you’ve got kids with you or you’re just a big kid at heart, this place is all kinds of fun. Rides, shows, and some seriously impressive Lego builds.
  • Johor Zoo – One of the oldest zoos in Malaysia, this one’s a great shout if you fancy a laid-back day checking out animals without the steep prices.
  • Istana Bukit Serene – While you can’t go inside, the palace grounds and iconic crown arch make for some cool snaps, especially at sunset.
  • Arulmigu Sri Rajakaliamman Glass Temple – This one’s dazzling—literally! The whole place glitters with coloured glass and mosaics. It’s unique and definitely one for the photo album.

How safe is Johor Bahru for tourists

Johor Bahru is generally a safe place for tourists, and loads of people—both locals and visitors—go about their day without a hitch. Like any other city, it's all about being street-smart and staying aware of your surroundings. Most areas, especially the ones popular with tourists, are well-patrolled and welcoming. You’ll find locals are usually super friendly and happy to help if you need directions or recommendations. That said, it’s always a good idea to keep an eye on your belongings in crowded spots like markets, shopping centres, and bus terminals—just the usual common sense stuff. Pickpocketing can happen occasionally, especially if you're not paying attention, so maybe leave the flashy jewellery and extra gadgets at the hotel. At night, stick to well-lit areas and avoid walking alone down quiet backstreets—nothing dramatic, just playing it safe. Taxis and ride-hailing apps like Grab are reliable if you’re out late or don’t fancy walking. And one thing worth knowing—crossing roads can be a bit of a sport! Not every car will slow down, so always stay alert. But honestly, if you stay aware, trust your gut, and treat it like you would any unfamiliar place, you’ll have a brilliant time. The city's got loads to offer, and with just a bit of caution, you're all set for a smooth, fun-filled trip.

What is the weather like in Johor Bahru

Johor Bahru’s weather is your classic tropical treat—warm, humid, and sunny most of the year. If you're a fan of sunshine and don’t mind a bit of heat, you’re in for a good time! Temperatures usually hover around 27°C to 32°C, so light clothes, sunnies, and suncream are your best mates here. But don’t forget the brolly—showers can sneak up on you, especially in the afternoon. They’re usually short and refreshing, so it’s nothing that’ll ruin your day. The rainiest months tend to be from November to January, thanks to the monsoon season, but even then, there are still plenty of clear skies in between. If you’re heading out sightseeing, mornings and evenings are cooler and comfier, while the afternoons can be quite toasty. It’s a great idea to pace yourself, pop into cafes or shops to cool off, and keep a water bottle handy. The humidity can be a bit of a shock if you're not used to it, but honestly, it just adds to that laid-back tropical feel. So whether you're strolling the streets, hopping over to theme parks, or chilling at the bay, the weather sets the tone for a relaxed, sun-soaked adventure. Just pack smart, plan around the rain, and you'll be set for an amazing time.

How do I travel from Johor Bahru Airport to the city center?

- Airport Shuttle Bus – There’s a handy shuttle that runs between the airport and JB Sentral (the main transport hub in town). It’s affordable, air-conditioned, and a relaxed way to get into the city. Perfect if you're not in a rush and fancy a scenic little ride.

- Taxi from the airport taxi counter – Just head over to the official taxi booth at the arrivals area, let them know where you’re going, pay at the counter, and hop into a cab. The prices are fixed based on zones, so no haggling needed—super easy!

- Car rental – If you’re the type who likes to take the wheel and explore at your own pace, there are a few rental counters right at the airport. The roads are decent and signs are in English, so driving’s not too tricky.

- Local bus – For the budget-conscious or those who love doing things the local way, you can catch a local bus from the airport to Larkin Sentral, and then hop on another bus to your destination. It’s a bit longer, but fun if you’re up for an adventure.

Whichever option you go for, you’ll be in the heart of Johor Bahru in no time. Just pick what suits your style and enjoy the ride!

What are the considerations when booking budget-friendly accommodations in Johor Bahru

  • Location, location, location – Try to stay close to key spots like JB Sentral, City Square Mall, or the CIQ checkpoint if you’re planning to pop over from Singapore. Being near public transport or main roads can make your trip a whole lot easier (and cheaper on travel).
  • Cleanliness and basic comforts – Always check recent reviews. A clean room, comfy bed, good shower, and working air-con go a long way, especially in the Malaysian heat!
  • Wi-Fi and extras – If you're planning to work remotely, stream a bit of telly, or just scroll through travel plans, strong Wi-Fi is a must. Bonus points if the place throws in free water, tea, or a light breakfast.
  •  Safety and security – Look for places with 24-hour reception, keycard access, and good lighting around the entrance. Peace of mind makes for a better night’s sleep.
  •  Real value for money – Cheap doesn't always mean cheerful. Compare what's included—some places offer bigger rooms, others better locations. Go for what suits your style and needs.
  • Friendly service – A warm welcome and helpful staff can really lift the whole stay. Some smaller guesthouses or hostels go the extra mile even if they’re easy on the wallet.

Tips for saving money on accommodations in Johor Bahru

1. Book in advance – Prices tend to creep up closer to your travel dates. Snapping up a room early often means snagging the best deals.

2. Compare booking platforms – Don’t stick to just one app or website. Check a few (and maybe even the hotel’s own site) to spot the lowest rate. Some even offer secret deals or extra perks.

3. Travel during weekdays – Hotel prices are usually cheaper from Sunday to Thursday. Avoid weekends and public holidays if you can, as that’s when demand (and prices) go up.

4. Go for hostels or guesthouses – These can be brilliant value, especially if you’re happy with the basics. Many offer cosy stays, friendly vibes, and free brekkie too!

5. Look outside the city centre – Staying just a little further from the main attractions can often save you quite a bit. Places around Mount Austin or Taman Pelangi still have great food, shops, and easy transport.

6. Check for freebies – Look out for places that throw in breakfast, Wi-Fi, water, or parking at no extra charge. Every little helps!

7. Stay longer – Some places offer discounts for longer stays. If you’re hanging around for a few nights, it’s worth checking if they’ll cut you a deal.

The Puteri Pacific Johor Bahru
It's damn bad. Everything is old and in bad condition. Toilet stinks. Bathtub is rusty. The water heater is not working properly. Aircon not cold. I was in room 1233. Swimming pool is dirty. Breakfast selection is limited and horrible. Seriously the worst hotel i've been in. Do not come to this place. Citrus hotel which is just across and cheaper is much much much better.

Berjaya Waterfront Hotel
This is my first time staying. So far, the room is comfortable and the hallway is very eye-catching with the clean red carpets covering the floor. There's 7-Eleven that's open 24/7 if I needed to grab anything. There are facilities that I can access such as a gym and pool, but I used their pool only, and it is open from 7 AM - 7 PM. I stayed there during the weekdays, so it wasn't crowded. The hotel is near local food restaurants, fast food, and just a few minutes away from the sogo midValley Mall (if you're planning to shop & have fun). On the other hand, the TV provided in the room isn't a Smart TV (no to Netflix). If you're planning on chilling, you need to bring your own projector. The parking can be waived, but you need to park inside the mall area which takes you about 10 minutes of walking to reach the hotel (a bit far and gloomy). So if you have a lot of luggage, just drop them first at the lobby before you park, or you can opt to pay RM15/day and park in front of the lobby area. Overall, my experience is amazing. I would like to return and stay again.

Amerin Hotel Johor Bahru
I have no idea I booked and paid in traveloka, but hotel unable to trace the booking number. Receptionist is very rude and not helpful at all. Push all the wrong to us … blame us for booking through traveloka. After all the argument, they find out that the booking transfer to trip. Com … but tell us there is no room available? How can this happen? I already paid and voucher received! Please give an explanation! Really feel so disappointed!
