Hougang is a residential town and planning area located in the Northeast side of Singapore. The town is the most populated in that particular region borders Sengkang to the north and Geylang as well as Serangoon to the south while Bedok is situated to the southeast, Paya Lebar on the east side and Bishan and Ang Mo Kio to the west side. There are eight subzones in Hougang; Hougang Meadow, Hougang Central, Hougang South, Kovan, Serangoon North and Buangkok View. Hougang is also where the last preserved kampong is situated in Singapore which is Kampong Lorong Buangkok.

The name Hougang is originated from the meaning river end as the location is situated upstream or at the end of Serangoon River. There was also a well-known well that was located at Hougang Street 21 that is identified as the tua jia kha that means “foot of a big well”. In the past, the village was popular for its food stalls, street wayang, Chinese medicine stores and story-tellers with spinning yarns for luck.

Hougang has been developing since 1977, prominently with the construction of Tampines Way and the development of new neighbourhoods. As Hougang is regarded as the heartland of Singapore because of its location that is fairly near to the Central Are, most of its commercial activities are centred around several shopping malls such as Hougang Mall, Kar Kar Mall, Heartland Mall, Serangoon Shopping Centre and Hougang 1.

How to Get There

By MRT

Hougang is reachable by two MRT Stations which are Hougang MRT station that is located beside the bus interchange and Hougang Mall as well as the Kovan MRT station that is located beside Heartland Mall. Residents that live nearby Buangkok can opt to drop down at Buangkok MRT station.

By Bus

Made available to the public is the Hougang Central Bus Interchange that goes around the Hougang Town as well as providing services to other parts of the island. This is a much convenient choice of public transportation if you wish to reach a location that is nearer to where you intend to go, as compared to the choice of MRT.

At nightfall, the 50 meters trees are brightly and brilliantly lighted up with a myriad of spectacular colours and light shows that starts at 8 pm. Although this place is situated in the Marina Bay, however, you can access this location from Hougang fairly easy just by taking either the public bus or the water taxi.

MacRitchie Nature Trail

Just a short trip away from the city centre of Hougang is the peaceful reservoir area of MacRitchie, a part of Singapore’s water catchment system that captures rainwater to supply to the island’s growing population. The trails made available to avid hikers, frequent joggers and even first-timers wanting to get some stress relieved go surrounding the park. There is also a café made available for visitors to stop by. It is recommended that visitors take the experience of walking upon the Tree Top Walk, a 250-meter suspension bridge that stretches across the rainforest canopies. Visiting here, it is best if you wear your hiking shoes and bring a lot of water.
