Lawas is a small town in the northeastern corner of Sarawak state. It is located between the Temburong district of Brunei and Malaysia's Sabah state. Lawas and nearby Limbang were infamous for its wild activities such as prostitution, massage parlours, pubs and rundown motels were common in both towns. Since then, both towns have undergone a complete transformation following major urban redevelopment in the last decade and development has been done by constructing residential areas, shops, shopping centres, agriculture projects and roads. It is cut off from the rest of Sarawak and is more easily accessed from Sabah.
Lawas is also the starting point for the logging road to Ba Kelalan in the Sarawak Highlands. There are local produce such as fresh fruits, vegetables, fresh meat, Adan rice, Bario rice, Ikan Tahai, Hill salts (Garam Bakelalan), handicraft traditional and live poultry are sold. Visitors can find almost everything at these markets and people are advised to come early as there are limited parkings and heavy traffic may occur.
