The Putra Mosque is located in the Federal Territory of Putrajaya, which is the central administrative capital of the country. Following the erection of Putrajaya as a modern planned city, Putra Mosque begun its construction in 1997 to finish two years later. Consisting of three main areas – the prayer hall, courtyard and function rooms, the mosque is set close to the Putrajaya Lake while Prime Minister’s Office is nearby.
The whole design of the mosque is a unique blend of Persian, Malaysian and other Muslim cultures. For instance, the prayer hall exhibits elegance through simplicity with no internal partitions but 12 giant pillars are in place, whereas the courtyard, or Sahn, contains mesmerising decorations and water features that graces upon the visitors, providing a welcoming atmosphere. At a peak time during major festive seasons such as Hari Raya or events such as the weekly Friday prayers, it is capable of accommodating up till 15, 000 worshippers. To enter the mosque, there is a dress code to be adhered which reflects the respect to the worship place – nonetheless special robes are provided just in case. Shoes are allowed but need to be removed as one proceeds to the prayer hall.
