Kampung Kuala Muda is a fishing village in Penaga, Seberang Perai Utara and nestled on the southern bank of Sungai Muda, across from Kampung Tepi Sungai, the Kuala Muda of Kedah. It is known as Kuala Muda, though to differentiate it from Kampung Tepi Sungai, which is also Kuala Muda in Kedah, the village on the Penang side is usually called Kampung Kuala Muda. As for the population, Kampung Kuala Muda composed of Malay and Chinese neighbourhoods. From here, on a clear day, visitors can get a good view of Penang Island. Kuala Muda was one of the areas badly hit by the December 2004 tsunami. As a result of the tsunami, over 4000 people had to be evacuated and placed in temporary shelter in 8 schools and after that, the village has recovered and become a town to itself.
From KLIA or Subang Airport to Langkawi International Airport, flights such as Air Asia, Malindo Air and Malaysia Airlines take around 50 to 55 minutes. Once you reach airport, you can take a taxi or rent a car to Kampung Kuala Muda area by using Padang Matsirat road or Kuala Muda road which takes another 15 minutes.
Spread across nearly six acres, Underwater World Langkawi is one of the island’s best-known attractions and located at the southern end of Pantai Cenang as well as 15 minutes away from Kampung Kuala Muda. The huge white-washed structure houses more than 200 different species of marine and freshwater fish including harbour seals, rockhopper penguins, sharks, giant rays and the enormous Amazonian arapaima which is the biggest freshwater fish in the world. The complex is divided into three sections which are tropical Rainforest, temperate and sub-antarctic. The Sub-Antarctic is known for the ‘penguin-arium’ which is a home to little and adorable rockhopper and black-footed penguins and there are Perch Jungle Carps, Orange Spotted Stingrays, Silver Dollar, Red-tailed Catfish and Bala Sharks which you can find at the freshwater section. Underwater World also has an educational Resource Centre, a cafeteria and a three-dimensional (3D) theatre and a giant walk-through six million litres underwater tunnel tank which houses an extensive number of fish including sharks, giant stingrays and green turtles.
Atma Alam Batik Art Village is a batik centre designed primarily to promote the art of batik in Langkawi. Located in Padang Matsirat, owners Aza Osman, an oil painter, and Roshadah Yusof, a batik artist, designed the half-acre centre as a place to showcase the creative spirit of batik. It has been established by the couple Aza Osman (an oil painter) and his wife Roshadah Yusof, also known as Sada who herself is a reputed Batik artist and designer. Having studied and learned fine arts in Italy, Aza returned to his homeland to share his experience and skills. Meanwhile, Sada had been a well- established batik artist and her batik artwork are displayed at most of the luxury resorts on the island. They moved to Langkawi together in 1987 and founded the Batik Art Village. The centre is divided into several sections which are a showroom, workshop, arts and batik gallery and handicraft display primarily displaying works by local artists. Atma Alam Batik Art Village has been recognized by the Ministry of Unity, Culture, Arts and Heritage of Malaysia. Also, a great place to unleash your kids’ creativity, the centre hosts art classes where students learn beautiful art pieces with batik prints. This place opens daily at 9 am - 6 pm and admission is free.
