Pulau Perhentian kecil is a beautiful island located at Terengganu state and in the district of Besut, Terengganu. Perhentian in Malay means stopping point. It was named after its role as a waypoint for traders travelling between Bangkok and Malaysia. There are two islands named Perhentian which are Perhentian Besar and Perhentian Kecil and both situated side by side. Both islands are inhabited by fishermen and now they become among the most popular tourism centres in Malaysia. From this island, you can ride a boat to few more small islands that the crystal clear water, the colourful corals is said to be a paradise for the divers where they get to meet the ages turtles, the beautiful under the sea life. Perhentian Kecil is famous for its vibrant nightlife and party, where there will be fire show, loud music. However, Perhentian Islands experience the monsoon season between October and March, and most of these islands will be closed to tourism activities. Resorts and ferry services are also shut down due to weather known as monsoon. As for language, people in Perhentian Islands speak Malay language with Terengganu’s dialect but most of them can speak basic English.
From Kuala Lumpur, you can purchase bus ticket and depart at Integrated South Terminal (TBS) to Kuala Besut, Jetty.
From Subang Airport or KLIA2, get a flight to either Kota Bharu or Kuala Terrenganu. Besut is a district in Terengganu yet Kota Bharu Airport is nearer to it. From the airports, you will have to take a taxi to the Kuala Besut Jetty.
Once you arrive at Kuala Besut jetty, you can book your round-trip boat tickets for RM70. You can bargain if you want a cheaper fee.
Ferries to both Perhentian islands leave almost every hour from Kuala Besut during regular business hours. A ferry ride of approximately forty minutes can be arranged by one of the many jetty operators, or in cooperation with many of the resorts.
Islamic Heritage Park is a park well-known for the miniature replicas of 22 famous monuments from the Islamic world, where visitors can learn about the spread of Islam in the countries. Other than seeing these replicas, the visitors can also visit and buy souvenirs at the shopping arcade and ride a slow boat cruise the nearby river. Admission fees to this monument park are RM25 and for adult RM10 discount for adult MyKad holders, RM15 for senior citizens and children age 7-12 whereas free for children age 6 and below.
The most famous snorkeling spots on this island include Teluk Pauh (to the left of the beach in front of the PI Resort), Shark Point and Tanjung Basi. Besides that, the best place to see sharks (black tip) is between Shark Point and the Teluk Dalam large beach, or the rocks off the Coral View and PI Resort. Most resorts and a few restaurants rent out snorkeling gear (RM10 a day for mask, snorkel and fins) and arrange snorkeling tours around the islands. The price range for snorkelling trip from Kecil is RM25-35 whereas On Pulau Besar, if you are planning to do snorkeling just in front of your chalet, you can stay on the northern and east side of the island where the water is clearer then the south side.
