The ‘An Nur Jamek Mosque, also known as the Labuan State Mosque is the single mosque in the Federal Territory Labuan. The mosque is located not far from the city centre of Labuan. The construction of the mosque began on 9 June 1980, controlled by the state government through Sabah Islamic Council (MUIS). However, the construction was suspended for some technical reason. It was then taken over and executed back on 16 April 1984 under the administration of the federal government right after the Federal Territory Labuan made the second after the Federal Territory Kuala Lumpur. Finally, the ‘An Nur Jamek Mosque was successfully inaugurated on 1 February 1988, in conjunction with the celebration of the Federal Territory Day. The ‘An Nur Jamek Mosque is stunning in view of its unique, futuristic design. It is equipped with a silver, grey metallic dome with two, tall towers that looks like a badminton ‘shuttlecock’. The overall identity is actually a combination of the Brunei Malay elements with a mixture of Turkish influence.
