Based on the tales from the folks here in Sabak Bernam, Sabak Bernam is derived from the word ‘Six friends’ or Sahabat Berenam’. According to the story, it is known that there are a total of six people who are brothers met at fallen tree that was blocking the river of Bernam river. They acted cutting it and proceed up the river. There is little evidence relating to six of the Companions of the graves in the area known as the sacred place like Sacred Pantai Landu, Sacred Cambodia, Sacred Hole Dizziness, Sacred Sepong, Sacred Kanji and Teluk Keramat Rubiah. All of them are believed to have died in different places in Sabak Bernam. In the initial stage, a small district of Sabak Bernam and Kuala Selangor to the Provincial administration center is located in Mukim Sabak namely in Pekan Sabak Bernam today. During the sub-district of Sabak Bernam to Kuala Selangor, there is no road transportation between the two areas and the only use of cross-road (bypass) the road known as the dirt road fuel is for the purpose of communication between the regions. The area of Sabak Bernam has been known as flooding area since in the year 1970 due to the location near the river.

The Sabak Bernam is one of the districts in Selangor and covers an area of 1,056 square kilometres. According to data, Sabak Bernam had a population around 106,158 in 2010. It is situated to the northwest of Selangor town. It is bordered by river of the state of Perak to the north, the district of Hulu Selangor to the east, the district of Kuala Selangor to the south, and the Straits of Malacca to the west. Towns in Sabak Bernam include Sabak, Sungai Besar and Sekinchan and Sabak Bernam's main economic activity is agriculture.

How to Get There

By Car

From Kuala Lumpur city centre, it takes around 2 hours to reach Sabak Bernam via Jalan Klang- Teluk Intan whereas the duration from Kuala Lumpur International Airport is approximately about 2 hours and 30 minutes by driving.

Birds Watching and Seeking Out Fireflies

The combination of nearby forest reserve, mangrove, sea, agricultural land and waterways has become the habitat of many species of birds. You can easily spot kingfishers, kites, owls and egrets. If any of visitors who like adventure, you can go jungle trekking at the Pusat Konservasi Enggang Sungai Panjang or Hornbill Conservation Area Sungai Panjang) near Kampung Parit 13 to watch the hornbill. Other than that, from the jetty of the Kelip-Kelip Conservation Area just outside of Kampung Tok Khalifa, you can watch the twinkling fairy light or fireflies display along the banks of Sungai Bernama and at Kampung Kuantan during the night.
