This rehabilitation centre offers visitors the opportunity to watch the orang utan up close in their natural habitat. Conceived in 1961 and had become reality by 1964, this place is named after the two rivers flowing into the Sandakan Bay. The main objective of this place is to return orphaned, injured or displaced orangutans back to the wild. The rehabilitation process starts as soon as the orangutan is admitted to the centre with a exhaustive health examination, followed by a quarantine period to eradicate diseases being transmitted. Young orangutans spend their time in the ‘Nursery’ learning skills important to jungle life. Once ready, they will move to the ‘Outdoor Nursery’ where dependence on food and emotional support is reduced. Lastly, most of them achieve total independence and unite into the Sepilok wild orangutan population. To get here by public transportation, take public buses and taxis from Sandakan town. The Labuk Road Bus Company vehicles usually depart from the front of the Sandakan Town Council (Majlis Perbandaran Sandakan or MPS) from 6.00 am onwards with the fare of RM2.10 for one way. The bus will stop at the junction to the centre and you will have to walk about one and a half kilometre to get to the centre office.
