The Tua Pek Kong Temple is situated on a foothill facing the view over the river and Kuching Main Bazaar. It is one of the few buildings that survived the 1884 Great Fire of Kuching, and is believed to have the best Feng Shui location in the city. The placement of the temple faces the water and the mountains, ensures a good channel of Feng Shui for its devotees to come and doing their prayers. It was constructed in 1843 in dedication to the Chinese deity Tua Pek Kong, literally meaning ‘Grand Uncle’. Various traditional festivals are held here, including the famous Wang Kang Festival to commemorate the dead.

Before entering the temple, there are brightly-coloured sculptures of dragons, which are symbols of power in the Chinese culture, on the retaining wall that supports the temple platform. A stairway brings visitors to the main entrance of the temple, which houses a large joss-stick urn. The interior of the temple greet visitors with more carvings and drawings on the inner walls, pillars and arches. The statue of Tua Pek Kong sits on the main altar situated at the center inside the temple. A long table is placed before the statue for place of offerings.
